Pride Month
June is Pride Month in Canada. Pride is a celebration; an occasion for all communities to come together. No matter who you love or how you identify, you will be seen, valued, and welcomed into the collective fold of celebration and affirmation. It is a time to celebrate diversity and 2SLGBTQ+ communities, acknowledge their history, the hardships they have endured, and the progress that has been made.
June was selected in many parts of the world to commemorate a tipping point in queer history — the STONEWALL UPRISING, which was instigated by a Black transwoman and lasted 6 days in Manhattan, NYC in June 1969 as police clashed with LGBTQ protesters. The above historical event had a tremendous and lasting impact on Canada’s separate and rich history of the struggle for 2SLGBTQ+ rights that should be celebrated but also be a reminder of how far we still need to go. If you’d like to learn more – Queer Events has a great TIMELINE of notable events in the history of Pride in Canada.
Simcoe Muskoka Family Connexions is proud to show its support to 2SLGBTQ+ communities and individuals and celebrate Pride Month alongside them. Our goal is to support an environment free of any discrimination, inequality and harassment and in turn affirm and celebrate each and every single person as they are. We encourage you to find ways to learn, express and be an active ally.
We hope you will join us in celebrating Pride Month today and every day.
