Historical CAS File Disclosures

For several years, in recognition of the legacy of residential schools and the Sixties Scoop, Simcoe Muskoka Family Connexions (SMFC) has been actively building relationships with the First Nations communities across the region and restoring the responsibility of providing child welfare services back to indigenous communities.

Between the 1950s and early 1990s, thousands of Indigenous children in Canada were removed from their families and placed with non-Indigenous foster or adoptive parents. Those affected lost contact with their families and critical connections to their language, culture, and identity. A class action lawsuit was launched with the intent to compensate those affected.
